NAN Fur Harmonization Agreement
In 2005, Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) entered into a 5-year agreement with Ontario and Canada to take on the administrative and management of the fur management in NAN territory (Treaty No. 9 and Treaty No. 5). It is open to all NAN fur harvesters who are active in fur management. The agreement identified key areas of fur management, including the licensing program.
NAN Licensing Program
NAN has been issuing the NAN fur harvesters licenses to trappers since 1997. Since its inception it has registered approximately 2400 trappers with an average issuance of 750 licenses each trapping season. Through the NAN fur harmonization agreement, NAN maintains compliance to the licensing program.
NAN Fur Depot
The NAN Fur Depot was established in 1994. Its main purpose was to have NAN members access the fur market industry and receive a fair market value for their fur. NAN acts as an agent/collector to the two auction houses (Fur Harvesters Auction Inc. and North American Fur Auction).
The depot is open to everyone (native and non-native trappers). Remote fly-in communities are provided a freight discount by Wasaya Airways for shipping their fur to the depot.
