Nishnawbe Aski Nation Economic and Resource Development works with our member First Nations in ensuring that their interests are met and carried out through political advocacy, policy development, and regional and community development.
Though Resolution 09/89, the NAN Executive have been mandated to develop an Economic and Resource development action plan and framework to address the issues raised in “The Future of NAN’s Economy”, discussion paper. This was to include all lands and resource sectors related to Economic and Resource development policy.
In February 2011, NAN held a three day Regional Economic Summit with NAN First Nations, industry, private businesses, provincial and federal organizations in Thunder Bay, Ontario. This conference generated a tremendous amount of information to determine where do we want to be in the future; how do we get to where we want to be; and what role does NAN play in assisting First Nations to accomplish their goals.
Some key recommendations are being implemented at this time and these are developing a NAN wide Economic Strategic Plan; First Nations inventory; Youth Initiative, to name a few.
