Northwest Fire Region Update
(June 11, 2018):
There were three new fires in the Northwest region by the late afternoon of June 11.
- Fort Frances Fire number 13 was discovered late in the day June 10 and actioned by a FireRanger crew this morning. The fire was located on a small island on Pickerel Lake in Quetico Provincial Park. At the time of this update it was not under control.
- Sioux Lookout Fire number 13 was another late evening discovery at Ningewance Bay on Kejick Bay Island. Four OMNR FireRanger crews were dispatched to the fire which was burning close to the community on the Lac Seul First Nation. It was declared out by 2 p.m.
- Nipigon Fire number 6 was reported around 4:30 p.m. in the ditch of Hwy. 17 a few kilometres from Neys Provincial Park near the Little Pic River Bridge. It is currently not under control.
The current forest fire hazard is high across most of the Northwest Region and extreme in the Sioux Lookout District. An anticipated 5-15 mm of precipitation is expected to de-escalate the fire hazard in the southern sectors of the Northwest Region in the next 24 hours.
