INTERGOVERNMENTAL NETWORK ON NORTHERN ABORIGINAL YOUTH


THE VISION

To have healthy, strong First Nation communities within Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) and Grand Treaty Council Three (GCTT), that embody resiliency, wellness and hope among their children, youth and families; achieved by coordinated, strategic support from First Nations, Provincial and Federal Governments.


HISTORY OF IGN


2000
  • The "Intergovernmental Committee on Youth Suicide" (IGC) is established; and
  • The ICG is to mobilize prevention initiatives for addressing the epidemic rates of suicide in NAN territory.

2005
  • IGC membership expands to include Grand Council Treaty Three (GCTT); and
  • Program changes name to "Intergovernmental Table on Aboriginal Youth Suicide" (IGT).

2007
  • Strategic Planning leads to change to "Intergovernmental Network on Northern Aboriginal Youth" (IGN).
  • A renewal of commitments is in process, within a framework which recognizes youth, family and community resilience as a keystone of prevention and community building.

2008 / 2009 WORK PLAN

Evaluation, Training, Mentoring and Networking Initiative: To support communities to demonstrate "Return on Investment" to funders; and develop evidence based proposals for funding and sustaining innovative, creative, solution focused and community driven projects within a resilience framework.

Communications and Information Sharing: To develop & implement a Communications Strategy including a QUARTERLY POSITIVE MESSAGING INFORMATION BULLETIN describing and promoting community projects and regional initiatives: Stories, ideas, activities, events, initiatives, teachings and other action at the community level where resilience building is taking place.

NAN Indicators of Resilience D-Base Initiative: To compile & analyze information from community projects, documenting and further establishing outcomes and impacts of resilience building in communities and gaps.

NAN Resilience Building Through Community Economic Development Tool Kit: To compile and distribute information resources to communities and Tribal Councils as a resource to facilitate all phases of project development.

NAN Resilience Development Consultations: To respond to community requests to provide ongoing support for all phases of resilience based prevention projects and involving community economic development involving the IGN.

"A strategy to measure and address social economic conditions, increase social-cultural opportunities and reduce social-cultural risks leading to improved resilience, wellness, hope and quality of life (an appropriate reservoir of human capital within vibrant social economies) in NAN communities, families and organizations."
