NAN ATHLETES COMPETING IN NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

THUNDER BAY, ON (July 14, 2017): Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) Deputy Grand Chief Derek Fox, on behalf of the Executive Council, congratulates athletes from across NAN territory competing in national and international competition this month.

Forty-five NAN athletes (list attached) will compete for Team Ontario at the North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) July 16-23 in Toronto.

Fort Albany First Nation member Mekwan Tulpin, a midfielder with the Belgium Women’s Lacrosse National Team, is competing at the 2017 FIL Rathbones Women's Lacrosse World Cup July 12-22 in Guildford, England.

“We are very proud of Mekwan and all these young athletes, especially those from our remote communities who have overcome significant barriers to compete at this level. Competition at such world-class venues will not only help develop their athletic skills, but will help them grow as proud leaders of our Nations,” said Deputy Grand Chief Derek Fox, who reached the semi-pro level during his hockey career. “NAIG is a tremendous opportunity for our athletes to celebrate their heritage and showcase their abilities through sport. We will be cheering for them as they go up against the best from Canada and the United States.”

Of mixed Mushkegowuk Cree and Belgian descent, Tulpin, 29, is an accomplished athlete with extensive national and international experience. She is the former female lacrosse lead with the P.L.A.Y. Program, and is currently a regional coordinator for the Aboriginal Sport & Wellness Council of Ontario. She currently lives on Six Nations of the Grand River territory.

The Toronto 2017 NAIG will host more than 5,000 participants for 14 sport competitions held in venues located across the Greater Toronto Area, including the Region of Hamilton and Six Nations of the Grand River. Competitors aged 13-19 will compete in 3-D archery, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, canoe/kayak, golf, lacrosse, rifle shooting, soccer, softball, swimming, wrestling and volleyball.
