MANDATE

To enhance the capacity of Member Nations to develop Social Services systems through provision of technical support in the areas of planning, evaluation, policy development and community development. The long-term goal of NAN is to develop a Social Services delivery regime under the Inherent Right to Self Government Policy table.

Continue to work towards an alternative arrangement for the delivery of social assistance as mandated by chiefs' resolutions: 01/015, 01/37, 01/060, 0//016, 05/059 (see attached)

Continue to work with First Nation political partners to establish First Nations Child and Family Services and jurisdiction according to NAN Chiefs' resolutions 01/059, 03/071, 04/010, 06/013 (see attached)

Continue to work with Kunuwanimano Child and Family Services on their designation as a mandated CAS (resolution 06/016) and  assist on their law suit on the Sixties Scoop (Resolution 05/55B)

Continue to work through the Coalition on Child and Family Services issues Resolution 06/013

The provision of technical support and analysis of government policy impacts for political advocacy in government-to-government relations.

To establish, maintain and support linkages with:

·     Aboriginal Healing and Wellness Strategy

·     Federal Government / Indian and Northern Affairs Canada

·     Provincial Government of Ontario / Ministry of Community, Family and Children's Services

·     Other provincial or federal departments as identified by the NAN Chiefs
 

The NAN Social Services Program may involve:

·     INAC Social Assistance programs and/or related initiatives

·     1965 Indian Welfare Agreement

·     Ontario Works

·     Ontario Native Welfare Administrators Association

·     Child Welfare Legislation

·     Child Welfare issues

·     National Dialogue for Early Childhood Development

·     Family Law Reforms

·     Day Nurseries, Child Care programs

·     Federal Disability Initiative

·     Family Violence Initiative Program

·     National Child Benefit Strategy

·     NAN Health & Social Strategic Plan

·     Social Development Program Management Initiative

·     Treasury Board renewal of authorities / identified anomalies (Band Rep)

·     Housing issues
