NAN/Canada Bilateral Energy Table

The Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) and Aboriginal Affairs Northern Development Canada (AANDC) entered into a Bilateral Protocol Agreement as mandated by the NAN Chiefs in Assembly; its focus is to help address key broad issues of NAN First Nations. Utilizing the Bi-Lateral Protocol and NAN Chiefs Resolution 09/39 for energy, NAN and AANDC established a Bilateral Energy Table to help address energy/electricity issues facing NAN First Nations.

The purpose of the NAN – AANDC Bilateral Energy Table is to help develop and advance strategies and plans to address NAN First Nation energy issues and interests. Initiatives will include the establishment of a data base on energy in NAN, identification of the energy opportunities, gaps, and barriers that need to be addressed.   A NAN First Nations energy conference will be held in early 2012 where First Nations can discuss their energy issues and interests, and ways to move forward on First Nation energy issues.

This initiative will provide an agenda, structure, process, and resources to develop and network relationships between First Nations, Tribal Councils, NAN, Canada, Ontario, other agencies and the private sector, and work together to advance NAN First Nation driven proposed renewable generation, transmission/grid connections, distribution and conservation initiatives.
