Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) is mandated by the NAN First Nations to protect Treaty No. 5 and Treaty No. 9 and their Adhesions, and Aboriginal and other rights of the NAN First Nations, which have been recognized and affirmed by section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982.
The policy of the Federal Government is to work with First Nations to renew partnerships, strengthen governments, develop new fiscal relationships and support communities. The NAN/Canada Bilateral Protocol is aimed at correcting current gaps in relationships and services, and the performance of the fiduciary responsibility of the Federal Government with respect to NAN First Nations
Through established forums, NAN and the Federal Government jointly identify crucial immediate needs of First Nations that can be part of a partnership approach. In these appropriate forums, regular and open communication is essential to ensure policy and program issues of interest to NAN First Nations and Canada are addressed.
