Oshkaatisak Gathering 2012
February 7th – February 9th, 2012
Best Western Nor’Wester Hotel & Conference Centre
Thunder Bay, Ontario
The NAN Oshkaatisak Council will be hosting their annual youth gathering this February 7,8,9 in Thunder Bay at the Best Western Nor’Wester Hotel and Conference Centre to promote health, education, culture, and success among NAN youth. Since 2004, the “Seven Sacred Teachings” gathering has delivered instructional workshops to help our youth regain their cultural identity and learn to effectively and safely deal with life’s troubles. The event has been renamed the Oshkaatisak Niigaan Oji Gathering for this year.
We, the Oshkaatisak Council (formerly “Decade for Youth”), are a group of young people from various NAN communities who are committed to increasing the quality of life in our communities today and in the future. Through the Oshkaatisak Development Office we host this conference every year to provide another way for our youth to learn and grow with peers in a positive way. We choose February for our gathering so that the winter roads may be used to transport youth from their communities. As in past events our focus is on resilience, health, and cultural identity. This year will also include career fairs around health and opportunities related to the Ring of Fire with the collaboration of our NAN partners for this year: the Women’s Council; the Health department; the Education department; the Economic Development department; and the Governance Secretariat.
